The Farmers

Ranee Solmonsson was raised in Newberg on a 13-acre family farm and has lived on the farm since 1999.  She strives for a grounded and healthy lifestyle of farm-raised products and minimizing her food miles and footprint by raising and eating local, made-from-scratch food from her farm kitchen.

Jody Solmonsson is a construction engineer by trade.  His building and planning background from all phases of commercial and civil construction bring an important set of skills to the farm in supporting farm production and infrastructure.

The History

The land at Sunshower Hill was homesteaded by the Schaad family on Parrett Mountain and the house was built in 1920.  Over the years there has been a wide array of products grown on this 9-acre parcel.  In 2000 a perimeter Doug fir stand was planted as a forest buffer zone and to create diverse habitat on the site.  The seasonal creek on the farm feeds into Chehalem Creek and the Willamette River, Ongoing conservation projects include re-establishing native habitats and protecting the soil from erosion.

The Commitment

Here at our family farm we use a wide array of sustainability practices.  These include diverse and pollinator-friendly  plantings in both crop areas and buffer zones, reforestation and native plantings for wildlife habitat, as well as beetle banks to encourage and mimic nature’s natural systems.  In order to protect and build our soil health, we  use no sprays of any kind and apply only organic and all natural soil supplements.  Our no-till approach also protects natural, healthy soil biology and its systems.  We use water-wise practices, including water catchment systems and drip irrigation.  We were recognized as a Flagship Farm by the Oregon Bee Project and continually work on special sustainability projects on the property.
